FAQ

Can everyone be hypnotized?

Everyone can experience hypnosis, as long as they are willing to be hypnotized.  In fact, we all experience hypnosis several times a day.  It is a natural state -- the transition period between awake and sleep.  With the right techniques and an understanding of how a client best receives suggestions, a professional hypnotist can induce hypnosis to enhance the therapeutic process.

Does hypnosis make me lose control?

No, you are actually in complete control when hypnotized. In fact, there is an even heightened sense of awareness when in hypnosis. Hypnosis can be described as a heightened learning state where an individual is more open to suggestions. In therapy, we use positive suggestions that allow progress towards a desired change. This is very different from “mind control,” which is a popular myth about hypnosis.

How is hypnotherapy different from stage hypnosis?

Hypnotherapy is very different from stage or entertainment hypnosis. When used for therapeutic purposes, this state of deep relaxation creates a comfortable environment for self-discovery and healing. For entertainment hypnosis, inhibitions are similarly kept at bay but for a different purpose. On stage, hypnosis helps with having fun and being silly without self-consciousness interfering. Rest assured, clucking like a duck does not happen during hypnotherapy sessions.

Does hypnotherapy work?

There is a wide body of research showing how effective hypnotherapy is! Particularly powerful is the 2007 Comparative Study by American Health Magazine:
Hypnotherapy - 93% success after 6 sessions
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - 72% success after 22 sessions
Psychoanalysis - 38% after 600 sessions

Do I need a referral?

This depends on your presenting issue. Per the California Business & Professions Code Section 2908, hypnotic techniques can be used to offer avocational or vocational self-improvement. For emotional/mental disorders or medical conditions, a referral from a licensed clinician in medicine, psychology, or dentistry may be required.

Where are sessions conducted?

Zoom or phone sessions are available and just as effective as in-person

Is insurance accepted?

Generally, no. Since hypnotherapists do not diagnose, hypnotherapy is usually not covered by insurance.  However, depending on your carrier, they may provide reimbursement after the client has first paid.  If so, check with your insurance company what is needed.  They typically will need a copy of the paid invoice and may want a note from your medical doctor or licensed professional providing approval for you to have hypnotherapy for your condition.
